Ethereum Dencun Upgrade Set for Mainnet Launch in a Month
The highly anticipated Ethereum Dencun Upgrade is scheduled to be launched on the network’s mainnet in one month. After successfully deploying Dencun to the Holesky testnet on February 7, ETH developers have announced the launch date on Geth v1.13.12, also known as Edolus. The Ethereum Dencun upgrade, featuring Proto-Danksharding and blobs, will be unveiled on March 13.
Proto-Danksharding Introduces Blob-Carrying Transactions
The main focus of the Dencun upgrade is Proto-Danksharding, which aims to increase block space on Ethereum layer 2s by implementing blob-carrying transactions. These transactions carry an additional piece of data along with the standard transaction information. This upgrade will reduce the number of blobs in each block to 16, with each blob being no larger than 128 kilobytes (KB), resulting in approximately 2 megabytes (MB) of increased block space.
Benefits of Additional Data Space
The additional data space provided by Proto-Danksharding will enable optimistic and zero-knowledge rollups to post commitments to transaction data on-chain. It will also allow the actual data to be stored in blobs rather than ‘calldata,’ enhancing the capabilities of the Ethereum network.
Mainnet Launch Details
The Dencun upgrade will take place at slot 8626176 on March 13, pending developer approval and GitHub confirmation. By February 22, developers are expected to release final versions of Ethereum clients that include Dencun functionality. Validators will then have two weeks to install these updated client versions on their nodes.
Improved Network Capabilities
Once the Dencun upgrade is completed, the Ethereum network is expected to process between 30,000 and 100,000 Transactions Per Second (TPS). Additionally, it should help reduce gas prices, which have been a bottleneck for the network, processing between 13 and 60 TPS.
Dencun on Holesky Testnet
The Dencun Upgrade is currently being tested on the Holesky testnet. This testnet was launched on February 7 and serves as the final testing ground before the mainnet activation. Prior to Holesky, Dencun was deployed on the Sepolia Testnet in January. Multiple testnets are used to ensure that upgrades are ready for the mainnet by identifying and fixing bugs and errors.
