Bitcoin Thief Caught After Reporting Another Crypto Theft

In a twist of irony, Jimmy Zhong, the mastermind behind the 2012 Silk Road marketplace hack that stole $3 billion worth of Bitcoin, was apprehended after attempting to report another crypto theft to the police. Zhong contacted the Athens-Clarke County Police Department and a private investigator in Loganville, Georgia to report the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars in Bitcoin from his own home.

However, months later, investigators traced the infamous hack back to Zhong when blockchain analysis identified a transaction from one of the hacker’s wallets. The transaction revealed that $800 worth of Bitcoin was sent to an address controlled by a centralized crypto exchange, which was connected to an account controlled by Zhong. This discovery gave the IRS enough evidence to suspect Zhong but not enough to prove guilt.

The Hacker’s Undoing: A 911 Call

To further investigate Zhong, two IRS agents and one police officer collaborated with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. They posed as investigators looking into the theft Zhong had reported six months earlier. During their visit to Zhong’s home, he expressed gratitude and even promised to invite them for a party if they solved the case.

The investigators managed to convince Zhong to disclose how he acquired his Bitcoin. He opened his laptop and revealed over $60 million worth of BTC stored in his wallet. Armed with this evidence, they obtained a search warrant and raided Zhong’s house on November 9, 2021.

The Outcome: Charges and Seized Assets

During the raid, officers discovered secret wallets containing millions of dollars’ worth of Bitcoin, including coins from the original Silk Road hack. As a result, Zhong pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges and began serving his one-year prison sentence in Montgomery, Alabama, on July 14, 2023.

The U.S. government has profited from the seizure of the stolen Bitcoin due to its soaring value since the time of the theft. The Department of Justice has sold the seized assets and has already earned over $500 million from the sales.
