Turkish Court Sentences Former CEO of Thodex Crypto Exchange to Over 11,000 Years in Prison
The former CEO of Thodex cryptocurrency exchange, Faruk Fatih Özer, has been handed an 11,196-year prison sentence by the Anatolian 9th High Criminal Court in Turkey. Özer was found guilty of charges including “establishing, managing and being a member of an organization,” “qualified fraud,” and “laundering of property values.” The court also imposed a $5 million penalty on Özer. His siblings, who were allegedly involved in the crypto scandal, also received identical sentences. Thodex was a popular crypto trading platform in Turkey before it abruptly shut down without warning users. After the shutdown, Özer fled the country with users’ assets, estimated to be worth billions of dollars. Özer was arrested in Albania and extradited to Turkey in April 2023.
