A UK citizen named Joseph James O’Connor, also known as “PlugwalkJoe,” has been sentenced to five years in prison in the US for committing cybercrimes, including stealing $794,000 worth of digital assets from a Manhattan-based crypto firm. O’Connor was extradited from Spain and pleaded guilty to multiple charges. In addition to the prison sentence, he will serve three years of supervised release and forfeit the stolen funds. O’Connor and his co-conspirators executed a SIM swap attack on the executives of the crypto firm and later laundered the stolen proceeds through a crypto exchange account controlled by O’Connor. He is also implicated in the high-profile Twitter hack that promoted a Bitcoin giveaway scam and profited over $344,000. O’Connor is further accused of stalking and threatening a minor, using a “swatting attack” to falsely report threats and provide the victim’s address to the police.
