Solana Network Experiences Five-Hour Downtime
The Solana network encountered a five-hour period of unusability, during which validators restarted the network. The downtime was caused by a bug that resulted in transactions entering an infinite loop.
The Post-Mortem
A bug in the Just-in-Time (JIT) compilation cache caused repeated recompilations of older programs, monopolizing network resources and halting operations. This bug affected version 1.17 of Solana’s validator client, impacting all validators.
The bug has been fixed to prevent its recurrence, but a more comprehensive solution is being planned for the future.
SOL Rises Despite Network Outage
Solana has experienced multiple outages since September 2021, amounting to over 150 hours of downtime. The bug was identified and reported to the Solana security team earlier, but it still caused disruptions.
Despite criticism from industry experts and allegations of centralization, the Solana community remained unaffected during the incident. SOL’s price rebounded after the downtime and is currently trading at $110.
Solana has emerged as one of the top-performing cryptocurrencies alongside Cardano (ADA) recently. Technical analysis suggests potential gains for SOL based on historical patterns related to Bitcoin.
