Washington State Launches Guaranteed Income Program
A new guaranteed basic income program is set to distribute millions of dollars in free money to Americans in Washington state. The two-year pilot program, called Thrive Prince George’s, aims to provide financial support to youth aged 18-24 who have aged out of the foster system, as well as senior citizens over the age of 60.
No Strings Attached Payments
Participants in Prince George’s County will receive monthly payments of $800 for two years, with no requirements tied to employment. These payments are in addition to any existing supplementary or government benefits they may already be receiving. The program is funded through a combination of public and private funds from various foundations and non-profit organizations.
Lifting Families Out of Poverty
The pilot program aims to lift more families out of poverty by increasing their financial stability and creating pathways to greater economic opportunity. Participants will have increased flexibility and financial freedom, allowing them to meet basic needs, pay off debts, secure permanent housing, further their education, or spend more time with their families.
A Lifeline for Participants
Phyllis Wright, a participant in the program, described it as a “lifeline” for her and her two teenagers as they struggle to make ends meet on a fixed income. The program provides them with the ability to afford groceries, gas, and prescriptions without worrying about financial constraints.
