US Lawmakers Call for Action to Free Binance Employee Detained in Nigeria
A Binance employee, Tigran Gambaryan, who serves as the Head of Financial Crime Compliance, has been held captive in Nigeria since February. Gambaryan was detained after arriving in the country for meetings with government officials concerning compliance issues related to the exchange.
- In March, the Nigerian government filed charges against Binance, Gambaryan, and another executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, accusing the world’s largest crypto exchange of being responsible for the collapse of the Naira, Nigeria’s local currency.
Letter to US Authorities
A letter addressed to US President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Special Presidential Envoy Roger Carstens, signed by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX), Representative Rich McCormick (R-GA), and fourteen other Republican representatives, states that Gambaryan is being unlawfully detained by a foreign government.
- The lawmakers emphasize that the allegations against Gambaryan are unfounded and are being used as a coercive strategy by the Nigerian government to pressure his employer, Binance.
Concerns for Gambaryan’s Well-being
The legislators express concerns about Gambaryan’s treatment during his detainment, citing reports of harsh conditions. They reveal that Gambaryan fell ill with malaria while in prison and was initially denied hospital treatment until he collapsed in court, prompting a court order for him to receive medical care at a private hospital.
- As of June 4, the prison has not fully complied with the court order, raising worries about Gambaryan’s health and safety.
Call for Urgent Action
The lawmakers urge for Gambaryan’s case to be transferred to the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, responsible for securing the release of Americans detained abroad unjustly.
- They stress the urgency of the situation, highlighting the need for immediate action to ensure Gambaryan’s well-being and prevent any harm to his life.
