If there’s a bear market in crypto, no one told luxury phone manufacturer Vertu.
Vertu recently launched its new smartphone, the Metavertu II Web3, which is specifically designed for the crypto-rich. The base model starts at $5,100, while the alligator skin finish version costs $9,300. The phone features a built-in crypto wallet, a decentralized operating system for running dapps, and the standard Android OS.
According to Vertu CEO Gary Chan, the company aims to cater to wealthy individuals in the high-net-worth segment who are unconventional and non-conformist. Chan believes that the emergence of the Web3 industry has created a new class of millionaires who share similarities with Vertu’s original customer base.
The main selling point of Vertu phones is their use of luxury materials such as sapphire screens and titanium frames. The Metavertu II also introduces a new I-DID identity system that links the phone’s IMEI number to the user’s decentralized identifiers (DID), providing control over digital identity.
The phone’s hardware includes an “unhackable” secure element chip and a segregated system for managing Web3 dapps. It also boasts zero-knowledge proof capabilities for enhanced security and efficiency.
Vertu has expanded its concierge service with a Hybrid AI Butler Service that combines AI with Web3 on a decentralized foundation. Chan believes that this approach restores data sovereignty to individuals and addresses concerns about extreme centralization in AI tools trained on big data.
Chan acknowledges that Web3’s user experience is not yet optimal and that there are high barriers to entry. However, he believes that Vertu’s strategy aligns with future trends and focuses on exploring the essence of Web3, with digital sovereignty as its core principle.
