Co-founder of Ethereum Expresses Hope for Verkle Trees in Blockchain Network

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain, is optimistic about the integration of Verkle trees into the network. He believes that this data structure will greatly improve the disk space used by betting nodes. Verkle trees will not only enable stateless clients but also save storage space required to run a node.

“They [Verkle trees] will enable stateless validator clients, allowing staking nodes to run with near-zero hard disk space and sync nearly instantly – far better solo staking UX. Also good for user-facing light clients.”

Buterin also highlights the benefits that Verkle trees will bring to the Ethereum blockchain. This data structure can upgrade Ethereum nodes to stop storing large amounts of state data while still being able to validate blocks.

“Verkle trees are a data structure that can be used to upgrade Ethereum nodes so that they can stop storing large amounts of state data without losing the ability to validate blocks.”

The integration of Verkle trees has been eagerly anticipated by the digital asset community on X. The prospect of near-zero drive space requirements and near-instant synchronization is seen as a game-changer.

Ethereum Update and Dencun Improvement Proposal

An Ethereum update known as the Dencun Update is expected to include the integration of Verkle trees. However, developers have stated that this update will not occur this year as more work needs to be done. The Dencun Update encompasses not only Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 4844 or proto-danksharding but also the implementation of seven additional EIPs that will impact various aspects of the blockchain.

Hot Take: Verkle Trees and the Future of Ethereum

The potential integration of Verkle trees into the Ethereum network holds promise for significant improvements in disk space usage and overall user experience. With near-zero hard disk space requirements and near-instant synchronization, staking nodes and user-facing light clients can operate more efficiently. This development aligns with Ethereum’s goal of enabling stateless clients and reducing storage demands. While the Dencun Update, including Verkle trees, may not happen this year, it represents a major step towards enhancing the capabilities and scalability of the Ethereum blockchain.
