Worldcoin Records Single-Day Sign-Up Record in Argentina
Worldcoin, co-founded by Sam Altman, has reported a single-day record of approximately 9,500 Argentinians successfully verifying their World ID despite ongoing investigations into the project over data privacy concerns. Sign-ups in Argentina are averaging at one verified individual every 9 seconds, propelling the World App to temporarily claim the number one spot on Argentina’s App Store rankings. The project collects data from individuals in four major Argentinian cities.
Worldcoin Faces Investigation Over Data Privacy Concerns
Worldcoin’s recent sign-ups occur amid an ongoing investigation by Argentine authorities into the project’s data privacy practices. The country’s Public Information Access Agency is thoroughly examining the collection, storage, and utilization of personal data. Worldcoin had previously faced government intervention and suspension of operations in Kenya due to similar concerns.
Privacy Concerns Surrounding Worldcoin
Despite its objectives of expanding economic access to the underserved, Worldcoin has faced scrutiny for its data collection methods. The use of iris scans for identification has raised privacy concerns, with experts fearing potential misuse of biometric data and security vulnerabilities.
Incentives Drive Sign-Ups
The large number of sign-ups in Argentina may be attributed to the project’s incentive of offering $50-60 worth of crypto in its native coin. Worldcoin, valued at $3 billion, claims over 2.2 million sign-ups worldwide since its soft launch in late 2021.
Worldcoin’s Global Reach
Worldcoin’s reach extends beyond Argentina, with previous success in Kenya. However, government intervention and data privacy concerns prompted the suspension of operations in Nairobi, where over a quarter of a million individuals had signed up to Worldcoin by December 2022.
