Worldcoin Introduces Personal Custody Features to Enhance User Privacy
Decentralized digital identity project Worldcoin has recently implemented Personal Custody features, offering users greater control over their data and enhancing privacy options. This move comes in response to concerns expressed by some individuals regarding privacy fears. The new package centers around Personal Custody, which ensures that the user’s identification information remains on their own device.
Previously, this information was deleted by default without giving users any control over the process. However, with the implementation of Personal Custody, users now have the ability to control and delete their data at any time.
This development is a significant step for Worldcoin in solidifying its user privacy details and architecture while also aiming for a wider ID network. Additionally, the new feature enables face authentication for various applications, providing enhanced security measures.
“Additionally, with Personal Custody, optional Data Custody will no longer be offered at the time of your orb visit. This helps ensure everyone can learn about Worldcoin before deciding if they’d like to share their information to help improve the project.”
All On Your Mobile
An important aspect of this update is that the entire process can be carried out on a mobile phone. Users can generate a public-private key pair and send the encrypted data to the backend, where additional keys are generated for double encryption. These keys are then passed to the Orb to create the necessary images for Worldcoin verification.
The Orb curates individual data packages, encrypts and signs them for authentication, and sends them back to the user’s phone before deletion.
“Since all data is encrypted by your public key, the result of this process is a collection of encrypted data packages that reside exclusively on your device.”
Worldcoin Aims for Wider Decentralization
In another development, Worldcoin plans to enhance the decentralization of its service by making its core components open source. A statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on March 22 highlights the open-source nature of these core components and provides reasons for this decision.
However, Worldcoin still faces regulatory hurdles in certain jurisdictions. The Kenyan government, for example, has maintained the suspension of the platform since August 2023.
Hot Take: Worldcoin Prioritizes User Privacy with Personal Custody Features
Worldcoin’s recent implementation of Personal Custody features demonstrates its commitment to user privacy and data protection. By giving users control over their identification information and ensuring that it remains on their own devices, Worldcoin addresses concerns about privacy and offers enhanced security measures.
The introduction of face authentication for various applications further strengthens the platform’s security protocols. Additionally, by making its core components open source, Worldcoin aims to promote decentralization and foster greater transparency within its ecosystem.
Despite facing regulatory challenges in some jurisdictions, Worldcoin continues to prioritize user privacy and strives to build a wider ID network. These efforts contribute to the overall growth and development of the decentralized digital identity space.
