Changpeng CZ” Zhao Receives a Four-Month Sentence for Aiding Money Laundering

In a recent development, Changpeng Zhao, popularly known as CZ and the co-founder of Binance, has received a four-month sentence after pleading guilty to aiding money laundering. This comes as a significant blow to CZ, who was once considered one of the most prominent figures in the crypto industry. The ruling, which was handed down on Tuesday, is lighter than the three-year sentence that prosecutors had sought. CZ is now the second crypto executive to be sentenced in recent months.

What Crime Did CZ Commit?

CZ’s troubles began when he was forced to resign from his position at Binance due to pressure from US prosecutors. They accused him of failing to implement anti-money laundering measures required by the Bank Secrecy Act and enabling illegal transactions between US citizens and individuals in sanctioned regions.

I would like to thank everyone for your care and support, be it writing letters, showing support on X, or in any other form. They all mean a lot to me and keep me strong. I will do my time, conclude this phase and focus on the next chapter of my life (education). I will remain a…

U.S. District Judge Richard Jones criticized CZ for prioritizing profits over compliance. He stated that CZ had the financial capabilities and resources to ensure that every regulation was followed but failed to do so. In a memorandum submitted by US prosecutors, it was alleged that Binance, under CZ’s leadership, attempted to circumvent the law. They claimed that CZ took a calculated risk and believed he would not get caught or face severe consequences if caught. However, CZ was caught, and now the Court will determine the price he must pay for his crimes.

The prosecutors also accused Binance, under CZ’s leadership, of supporting the sale of child abuse materials and profiting from fees generated by ransomware attacks. As part of a settlement deal last year, Binance paid approximately $4 billion in fines to US authorities.

After his sentencing, CZ expressed remorse and took responsibility for his actions. He apologized to the court and acknowledged that he failed to implement an adequate anti-money laundering program. He now understands the gravity of his mistake.
