Ethereum Game on Blast: $4.6M Hack 😱 – White Hat Rescue to the Rescue? 🦸‍♂️

Super Sushi Samurai Game Works with Hacker to Return Stolen Funds

The team behind a popular Telegram-based game, Super Sushi Samurai, announced on Thursday that they are collaborating with a white hat hacker to return funds to users. The game recently experienced an exploit that resulted in the theft of approximately $4.6 million worth of tokens. The hacker targeted the game, which operates on the Ethereum scaling network called Blast. As a result of the hack, the price of the game’s native token, SSS, plummeted to a fraction of a penny. Fortunately, a white hat hacker discovered the exploit and reported it to the game’s developers.

Exploit Leads to Token Theft

The hacker took advantage of a token transfer bug within the smart contract that powers Super Sushi Samurai. By exploiting this vulnerability, they were able to increase their token holdings. This exploit allowed them to double their balance by transferring their entire amount to themselves. The hack was discovered by a pseudonymous smart contract developer named Coffee (aka X) who shared the details on Twitter.

White Hat Rescues and Collaboration

CertiK, a security firm, identified the exploit and referred to it as a white hat rescue on Twitter. In these situations, hackers exploit a protocol to reveal vulnerabilities and help improve security measures. Typically, these noble hackers are rewarded and allowed to keep a portion of the stolen funds. In the case of Super Sushi Samurai, the white hat hacker reached out to the game’s team to assist in returning the stolen funds safely.

The team behind Super Sushi Samurai expressed their collaboration with the white hat hacker on Twitter and assured users that they are working towards recovering the funds. They also mentioned that an update and postmortem would be provided soon.

Impact on SSS Token and Traders

Following the hack, Cielo.Finance, a blockchain data tracker, observed a surge in SSS token purchases. Traders often buy tokens after a hack in anticipation of a white hat rescue and subsequent price increase. This behavior is driven by the expectation that once the stolen funds are returned, the value of the tokens will rise.

About Super Sushi Samurai

Super Sushi Samurai is an idle game that operates within the popular instant messaging platform Telegram. Similar to Notcoin, another popular crypto game on Telegram, Super Sushi Samurai allows players to control cartoonish warriors who battle enemies to earn token rewards. Additionally, the game features NFT land plots that play a role in “megawar” battles between clans.

Built on Ethereum’s Blast Network

The game runs on Blast, an Ethereum layer-2 network designed to enhance scalability and reduce transaction costs compared to the mainnet. Blast launched its mainnet at the end of February but faced technical difficulties shortly after due to the Dencun upgrade on the Ethereum network.

Despite these challenges, Super Sushi Samurai continues to attract players and engage them in its unique gameplay experience.

Hot Take: Collaborating for Greater Security

The collaboration between Super Sushi Samurai and the white hat hacker demonstrates the importance of proactive security measures within the crypto space. By working together, developers and hackers can identify vulnerabilities and strengthen protocols, ultimately benefiting users and ensuring a more secure gaming environment.

While hacks are always a concerning issue, it is reassuring to see that prompt action was taken to address this incident. The efforts made by both parties involved will likely contribute to enhancing security practices within Telegram-based games and other crypto platforms.
