Four US Residents Charged by DOJ for $80 Million 'Pig Butchering' Crypto Investment Scam Involving Money Laundering

Four US Residents Indicted for $80 Million Crypto Investment Scam

Four individuals are facing potential jail time of up to 20 years after being indicted by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) for their involvement in a massive crypto investment scam. The accused, Lu Zhang, Justin Walker, Joseph Wong, and Hailong Zhu, allegedly conspired to launder the proceeds of a “pig butchering” crypto investment scam and other fraudulent schemes.

The Scammers’ Modus Operandi

The scammers targeted victims through unsolicited messages on dating sites and social media platforms. They built relationships with their victims and then introduced them to fake crypto investment opportunities on fraudulent websites and applications that they operated.

Initially, the victims would see significant gains in their investment accounts, which convinced them to invest more money. However, they eventually discovered that they were unable to withdraw or recover their funds.

The Alleged Money Laundering Scheme

The DOJ states that Zhang, Walker, Wong, and Zhu transferred the illicit funds through shell companies and bank accounts. They conducted at least 284 transactions totaling over $80 million in victim losses. Additionally, they deposited $20 million directly into their own bank accounts.

Legal Consequences

All four individuals are facing charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering, concealment of money laundering, and international money laundering. Zhang and Walker have already appeared in federal court following their arrest.
