Google Updates Policy on Advertising Blockchain-based Games with NFTs

Google has recently announced a revised policy regarding advertising for blockchain-based games involving non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Starting from September 15, 2023, advertisers can encourage NFT games that allow players to purchase in-game items, such as virtual apparel or weapons. Nonetheless, Google explicitly stated that certain activities are not allowed, including staking NFTs in exchange for digital currencies and simulated casino gambling that offers the opportunity to gain  NFTs. To advertise gambling-related content with NFTs, advertisers must adhere to Google’s “Gambling and games policy” and acquire the proper Google Ads certification.

Shift in Google’s Stance

This policy update represents a whole lot of shift from Google’s previous ban on cryptocurrency-related advertising in 2018. The ban was partially lifted in June 2021, allowing selected corporations to advertise. Google emphasizes the importance of compliance and is warning that violations of the policy will result in a warning before any account suspension.
