Turkish Crypto Exchange CEO Sentenced to Over 11,000 Years in Jail

Thodex CEO Receives 11,196-Year Prison Sentence

The CEO of Thodex, a Turkish cryptocurrency exchange that collapsed earlier this year, has been sentenced to 11,196 years, 10 months, and 15 days in prison. Faruk Fatih Özer, the 29-year-old crypto exchange boss, faced multiple charges including fraud, leading a criminal organization, and money laundering. Prosecutors had initially requested a prison sentence of 40,562 years for Özer.

Thodex Found Guilty as a Criminal Organization

The court ruled that Thodex itself was a criminal organization and that Özer had acted with fraudulent intent from the beginning. Özer’s sister and brother, Serap and Guven, were also found guilty of the same charges. However, Özer denied the allegations, claiming that his actions were not criminal and that he would not have acted in a naive manner. He emphasized his ability to lead any institution, citing the success of Thodex, which he established at the age of 22.

Thodex’s Downfall and Özer’s Arrest

Thodex was once one of Turkey’s largest crypto exchanges until it suddenly collapsed in April 2021. Özer disappeared, leaving over 400,000 customers unable to access their cryptocurrency holdings worth around $2 billion. After being on the run, Özer was arrested in Albania in August 2021. Following a lengthy legal process, he was extradited back to Turkey in June and found guilty of money laundering, fraud, and organized crime.
