OP Mainnet: The Game-Changing Renaming That Will Revolutionize Layer-2 Scaling

Layer-2 scaling solution Optimism Labs has renamed its blockchain to “OP Mainnet” to delineate the blockchain from the collective vision of “Optimism”. The goal is to create a “superchain” that will be one of many L2 chains, including Base, Celer, and Polygon zkEVM. The recent Bedrock upgrade by Optimism aims to reduce gas fees by 40% through improved data compression, bringing the platform closer to its goal. Optimism is currently second to its rival Arbitrum in terms of transaction volume but surpassed it in January. However, Arbitrum has a higher total value locked (TVL) due to its involvement in cross-chain protocols, lending protocols, and yield farming. With the Bedrock upgrade, Optimism hopes to increase its competitiveness with faster transactions and cheaper fees. The shift from “Optimism” to “OP Mainnet” signifies a strategic and visionary change, aiming for greater interoperability and decentralization within the Ethereum ecosystem. The rivalry between OP Mainnet and Arbitrum extends to their design choices and priorities, with OP Mainnet’s single-round fraud proof system being faster but more expensive than Arbitrum’s multi-round system. The Bedrock upgrade has the potential to alter the balance between speed and cost, making OP Mainnet more attractive. The success of this strategy remains to be seen, but the ambition behind it is clear.
