Tech Titans Clash: Dorsey Challenges Cook on Apple Pays Bitcoin Absence!


The Damus app, developed for the decentralized social networking app Nostr and backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, is facing removal from the App Store due to Apple’s strict payment rules. Apple prohibits developers from selling additional in-app content unless the transactions are processed through Apple, which takes a 30% cut. To work around this ban, the Damus team had to modify the app’s tipping feature, only allowing tips on profiles and removing the tips button from posts. Last year, Dorsey donated around $245,000 in bitcoin to fund the development of Nostr. On June 26, the Damus team expressed frustration on Twitter and announced plans to appeal against the removal. The following day, they sarcastically suggested using Apple Pay when it supports censorship-resistant, peer-to-peer payments. Dorsey publicly questioned Apple CEO Tim Cook about why Apple Pay doesn’t support bitcoin and expressed disappointment over Damus’s removal for enabling global tipping without bank or government permission.
