Scroll Launches Mainnet for Ethereum Compatibility

The zkEVM-based Mainnet of Scroll, a layer-2 protocol for Ethereum, has been launched, marking a significant milestone in scaling the capabilities of Ethereum. The announcement was made on X.com, with the Scroll team expressing their excitement after more than two years of development. However, it was discovered that the smart contract had been running in stealth mode since October 8, with the official announcement delayed by a week. The launch saw a surge in deposits, with 2,030 ETH being deposited on the Scroll platform, most of which arrived within the last 24 hours.

Advancing Ethereum Scaling with zkEVM

Scroll’s layer-2 platform introduces Ethereum compatibility through its zkEVM protocol, allowing contracts written for the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) to seamlessly operate on the Scroll network using zero-knowledge proofs. This enables smooth migration of applications from Ethereum to zkEVM. Other layer-2 solutions like Polygon and Matter Labs also offer zkEVM options, while Arbitrum and OP Labs’ OP Mainnet utilize “optimistic rollups.”

Building a Community and Encouraging Experimentation

Over the past year, Scroll has been focused on fostering a community of developers and encouraging experimentation on their platform. More than 100 projects have already been deployed on Scroll’s testnets, covering infrastructure, DeFi, and Web3 gaming ventures. These projects have collectively generated impressive statistics, including over 450,000 smart contract deployments, 90 million transactions, an average of 305,000 daily transactions, and the creation of over 9 million blocks along with more than 280,000 ZK proofs.

Prioritizing Security and Audits

Security remains a top priority for Scroll. The protocol has extensively tested its platform across three separate testnets and undergone thorough audits by four independent security firms. Scroll’s Co-founder, Haichen Shen, emphasized their commitment to security, highlighting the presence of a dedicated internal security team and their open-source approach since the beginning.

The Unique Experience of zkEVM

Scroll’s zkEVM offers a user experience that closely resembles Ethereum, distinguishing it from other layer-2 protocols. Developers can easily transition their existing Ethereum projects to Scroll with minimal adjustments to their codebase. Sandy Peng, co-founder of Scroll, emphasized their focus on enabling developers to build blockchain applications that will drive real-world use cases and attract new users.

Hot Take: Scroll Launches zkEVM-based Mainnet to Scale Ethereum

Scroll has made a significant move in scaling Ethereum’s capabilities by launching its zkEVM-based Mainnet. This advancement allows for cheaper and faster transactions on the Ethereum network. With an emphasis on security and an active developer community, Scroll is positioning itself as a promising layer-2 solution for Ethereum compatibility. The seamless transition of projects from Ethereum to Scroll through zkEVM ensures a smooth user experience for developers. As more projects are deployed on Scroll’s platform, we can expect increased adoption and growth in the ecosystem.
